So far, I have been studying in America for several weeks. And studying in UD, I find I am experiencing a quite different way of dealing with things from China. When considering about the most obvious difference of “Nonverbal Commuication” between China, which is my hometown, and America, I would immediately come up with the situation about the ways of greeting.
First of all, the most impressive thing is that when people meet somebody, whatever a stranger or a acquaintance, they will always greet with him or her by a smile on their faces. As you know, Chinese people don’t greet that way. So at the first time I came here, I felt so embarrassed, for it seemed that I was not friendly enough cause I didn’t return a smiling face. I think the amount of population mainly causes this difference, for there are too many people in China, you must remain smiling all the time to greet with people, which is crazy.
Secondary, usually, especially for students, when meeting friends, we will pat hip to show amity, which is awkard if you are in America, and, on the opposite, shows that you are a gay. So never pat others’ hip when greeting with someone!!
Finally, in China, it tells others that you are lovers if you are very close to a boy or girl. So there is usually a big space between boys and girls. On the contrary, in America, boys and girls don’t care that much. So you cannot make a judgement from what you see.
Hopefully, I can adapt to the “Nonverbal Commuication” in America.
