Essay(I chose):
A Way With Words, or Away With Words: Effect of Texting and Iming on Language.
By Timothy Barranco.

Many today’s youth use various contractions to shorten messages so as to send their words to others by a more convenient way. The impact of txt(the author used txt for “texting language”) on schoolwork and language skills is not as huge as people think. However, txt is a natural and necessary evolution of the language. The reasons provided by the author are: first, the words used in shortenings are less than 3% of the whole word data. Second, people who use the txt must master language enough before using. Third, the bad habits developed are short-lived. Fourth, the range of using txt is quite narrow. Fifth, the author himself used txt less frequently than in years, for he mainly meet or talk with formal people, such as professors, businessmen, and other adults who would disapprove of his using txt. Sixth, using txt is not the first time, for it happened before with agreement, and there was no bad result.

The types of evidence the writer present to support his claim are: statistic gathered from researchers, arguement provided by himself, datas from books, datas from magazine, experience of himself, evidence from dictionary and examples raised by scholars and researchers.

I think this essay is quite persuasive, and I totally agree with the author. There are plenty of evidences, arguments, datas, examples and experiences provided by the author, and all of them are persuasive and vaild. This is a great essay.

What I read is Going Nuclear by David Denlinger
Paraphrase: page 65, second paragraph.
The nuclear process begins inside of the reactor core where large amounts of pellets are “packed inside fuel pins,” which are in turn mounted together as fuel elements(Park 9).
Quotation: page 65, third paragraph.
According to the World Nuclear Association, an organization made up of companies connected with the production of nuclear power: “In general the construction costs of nuclear power plants are significantly higher than for coal-or gas-fired plants because of the need to use special materials, and to incorporate sophisticated safety features and back-up control equipment”(“The Economics of Nuclear Power” 3).

In my opinion, the reason why the writer chose to present their research material in this way is because if using paraphrase and quotation, he can make his essay more convictive. As we know, an opinion is stronger and easily accepted by people if this opinion is based on fact. As the writer did, he set his opinion on several facts which have been already proved, which can make his readers believe what he told is true. Besides, if using paraphrase and quotation, the writer can save a lot of time on doing research.

In this essay, the writer used huge amount of facts that based on research by paraphrase or quotation. The way about how the research contributes to the overall meaning of the essay is after listing a definition or opinion, research showed up to give a specific example so as to better explain.

Question: think of any instance you can of the winners writing the history. What would the same history look like if the losers wrote the history?

History is being taught and being mentioned all the time during a person’s life. Bacon once said, “histories make men wise.” Based on this famous sentence, we always regard history as one of the most important knowledges. However, have you ever thought, “are all the histories you learned about always the truth”? Obviously, you will find the answer denied if you ever attempted to figure out by comparing the same history written by winners and losers.

The truth of the war between China and Japan during World War II is distorted by Japanese almost all the time. From the aspect of Chinese people, that period is the darkest time during the whole five thousand years of Chinese history. More than 35000000 Chinese were killed just in eight years. In fact, without any exaggeration, every place passed by Japanese invaders, burning houses, crying people, bloody bodies and laughter of Japanese invaders showed up. Due to the shortage of my words, I am so guilty about unable to express the extremely cruel scene during that time. However, on the other hand, the truth of the Japanese’ barbarities rarely show up in their history books and media. Instead of loots, the appearance of Japanese always shows up with braveness and admire in Japan.

I didn’t have any intention to accuse any country. Instead, I just commented about this truth. As a Chinese, I should focus on how to figure out what I can learn from true history, so do you.

No one can deny a fact that it will be a hard time for a student to study abroad, for not only will he experience cultural differences, but also he will have difficulty dealing with loneliness.

In my opinion, after reading the excerpt written by Liu, it is quite a common phenomenone that he wanted to be with other Chinese. As a Chinese student studying abroad just like him, and also based on the different ways of communicating, making friends and dealing with things between China and America, I totally understand what he thought. And besides, I believe it’s a good idea to stay with Chinese people even they are strangers when Liu felt alone and frustrated.

Such experience also happened to me not only for one time. The first time setting foot on this place, I felt nervous and hopeless because there is no people for me to fluently communicate with. And as an international student, I suffered language difficulty all the time. All I hoped was when doing something, there was a Chinese who could help me. So every time how happy was me when hearing a Chinese voice. What’s more, I also found it really hard to make friends with native people, for they never regard you as one of them or you don’t trust them indeed. In conclusion, you like strangers to each other all the time. Therefore, we need to find someone, someone comes from our country, someone speaks our language and someone just looks like you.

So far, I have been studying in America for several weeks. And studying in UD, I find I am experiencing a quite different way of dealing with things from China. When considering about the most obvious difference of “Nonverbal Commuication” between China, which is my hometown, and America, I would immediately come up with the situation about the ways of greeting.

First of all, the most impressive thing is that when people meet somebody, whatever a stranger or a acquaintance, they will always greet with him or her by a smile on their faces. As you know, Chinese people don’t greet that way. So at the first time I came here, I felt so embarrassed, for it seemed that I was not friendly enough cause I didn’t return a smiling face. I think the amount of population mainly causes this difference, for there are too many people in China, you must remain smiling all the time to greet with people, which is crazy.

Secondary, usually, especially for students, when meeting friends, we will pat hip to show amity, which is awkard if you are in America, and, on the opposite, shows that you are a gay. So never pat others’ hip when greeting with someone!!

Finally, in China, it tells others that you are lovers if you are very close to a boy or girl. So there is usually a big space between boys and girls. On the contrary, in America, boys and girls don’t care that much. So you cannot make a judgement from what you see.

Hopefully, I can adapt to the “Nonverbal Commuication” in America.

Option1:
After reading the article ‘The First Four Minutes’, I get a lot. I used to judge a stranger from the first impression, which I find wrong now. Besides, I think it reminds me of a important thing that concentrating on person who is talking, which is a way to show respect.

How to act properly in front of someone who is new for you is a kind of knowledge, for you always want to give a nice impression of yourself. You are supposed to act as a friendly, active and enthusiastic person so as to make friends with others. And also, it’s very important not to lose your real personalities.

As for me, differing from other people who tends to hide their real personalities when meeting a new person, the image of myself which I’d like to portray is the real me. Image this, how disappoionted would be if someone find his friend are not the one he thought? Thus, In my view, if you really want to make friends with someone, you must show him the real you.

But, actually, sometimes, I cannot behave the way I want, for what I behave depends on what I feel. Feeling unhappy one day, I don’t have the strong will to talk with people, though I will be friendly.

I am a person with a strong will to meet people. Maybe you will ask why I like to meet people? I will say ‘more friends, more ways’, including the way of having fun and getting help. I’m a person who wants to be friendly and kind with others. That is me, and that is the image I want to portray in front of others.

Different languages

I am a completely southerner of China, so are my parents. Therefore, there is no obviously differenct language in my family, for we can use the same kind of accent to communicate. But if there is, it would be the variable languages my parents can speak. Both of them can speak two kinds of local language. My parents always used those two kinds of language to communicate with my grandparents, aunts and uncles, which led to a fact that I can totally understand what they say but can only speak a little bit. That is the biggest influence on me. On the opposite, considering the differences of education we had in our schools, there is also a language which I can say but my mom cannot. That is English.

Well, as I grow up, and as a normal student, I guadually found out the differences between the language I use in formal situations and in less formal ones. For instance, when I come to my friends’ home, I usually say “hello” before entering their rooms. On the contrary, I have to say “may I come in” before entering a teacher’s office. That is the difference.

And, I’ve been to some places in China and met a lot of people who said different languages, some of which I could clearly understand but others couldn’t. I remember when I went to Guangdong province, all the people there say Cantonese. I can understand Cantonese, but it is a different kind with Guangdong Cantonese. So it was hard for me to communicate with local people there if we didn't change to mandarin.

Finally, there are huge amount of variable languages in the world, which we definitely cannot understand them all. So just find a comfortable way for both of you.
